401 reopens in Cambridge after shooting incident, SIU investigating

Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate after a shooting incident shut down all lanes of Highway 401 through Cambridge on Saturday.

Initial reports came in to 570 NEWS just before 4:30 p.m. – as there was a large police presence on the 401 at Homer Watson.

Both OPP and WRPS were on scene initially, and all westbound lanes of the 401 have since reopened – while one eastbound lane remains closed.

Police have also blocked Old Mill Road at Dickie Settlement for several hours for the investigation.

Regional Police say around 4 p.m. on Saturday – they were notified of a potentially armed break and enter suspect on the run, and Hamilton Police believed they were headed to Waterloo Region.

Several weapons were allegedly stolen in the heist, and WRPS officers were able to locate the wanted vehicle in the Dickie Settlement Road area of Cambridge.

Police say the suspect was then seen walking on the side of the 401 near Homer Watson. It’s at this time when an interaction occurred with an officer – resulting in the discharge of their service firearm.

A 30-year-old Hamilton man was shot in that interaction, and airlifted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the involved officer was not physically injured.

The Special Investigations Unit has been notified, and will probe the incident.

The SIU invokes its mandate when incidents involving police and civilians result in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
