Guelph storms back scoring three late to take Game 3

The Guelph Storm scored three goals in the final two minutes and nine seconds.

They actually came within 78 seconds. Two were just 24 seconds apart. Those two were the game-tying goal and the game-winner.

The Storm slapped the Kitchener Rangers 7-5 earning their first win the series in Game 3.

“We came out on fire,” said Rangers head coach Jay McKee, after his team led 1-0 and 3-2 in the opening frame. “For a lot of the game, we had a lot of compete, and had a lot of energy. It’s a tough one.”

The Storm came into Game 3 just 1-for-6 on the power play but converted three times on five attempts Tuesday.

McKee noticed something different on his team’s penalty kill but it wasn’t his player’s ability, it was the officiating.

“I saw Givani Smith get cross-checked four times on their bench and then get upset, and him get a penalty, not [Isaac] Ratcliffe for cross-checking him four times,” said an obviously upset McKee. “I saw Nick McHugh get picked so he couldn’t go into his lane and take away the pass when they scored the first one. On their last one, I saw Austin McEneny get basically bear-hugged from behind and not be able to clear the puck.”

“I don’t know what you can do when our guys can’t get into positions or clear pucks, it’s pretty tough to kill a penalty.”

Kole Sherwood led the way offensively for the Rangers with two goals. He’s scored in each game of the series. Logan Brown and Kyle Gentles each had two assists.

The Storm tries to ride the late-game success tonight into Game 4 in the Royal City.

“[Game 4] is a statement,” said Sherwood. “You don’t want to have to go back to your barn 2-2.”

Game 5 goes Good Friday at the Aud. Pre-game tonight at 6:35 p.m.
