Cambridge runner hanging up the spikes

Nathan Brannen of Cambridge is retiring from track and field competition.

The 35-year-old made the announcement on Monday afternoon.

“It’s been a hard decision but I’m ready to hang up the spikes and retire from professional track and field. My love for the sport will keep me involved and jumping in the odd road race here and there, but my track days are behind me. I still feel like there is a lot of unfinished business in the sport, but at the same time, I feel good about my decision to retire and take the next step in life. My wife, Theresa, and two children, Gianna and Grayson, have watched me chase my dreams for a long time and I’m ready to just be Dad.” Brannen said in a statement.

He won silver in the 1500-metres at the 2015 Pan Am Games and at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He also represented Canada at the Olympics three times.

During his career, Brannen broke seven Canadian records and retires as the current record holder in four events: outdoors at 1,000-metres (2:16.52) and 2000-metres (4:59.56), and indoors in the 1,000-metres (2:16.87) and mile (3:54.32).

Brannen attended the University of Michigan, where he collected four NCAA titles.

He’s now coaching a high school cross country team in Ohio, where he lives with his family.
