Food drive launches in Cambridge, but supplies expected to run out fast

The Cambridge Self Help Food Bank has kicked off its Spring Food Drive, and things are looking a bit desperate.

Executive Director, Pat Singleton, tells 570 NEWS they hope what’s collected now will last through the summer to Thanksgiving, but she says frankly it will not.

In fact, she expects the food will run out in July or August.

In terms of donations, she hopes people “can do what they can do”.

They especially need donations of baby food, small jars of peanut butter, cereal, pasta and pasta sauce, and canned foods.

Singleton says they have not set a fundraising goal, either in terms of food or financial donations.

But she says whatever money they receive can buy more food to stock their shelves when the donated food runs out.

Donations can be made at at the food bank itself, at 54 Ainslie Street South, in Cambridge.

Or at grocery stores, espcially Fresh Co, which hosted the kick-off event for the food drive this morning.

Fresh Co stores are offering pre-packaged donations of food in paper bags for either $5.00 or $10.00.

More information about how you can help can be found at the Food Bank’s website.
