WLU on board with Waterloo Regional Police approach to St. Patrick’s Day

Waterloo Regional Police have already said “enough is enough” when it comes the unsanctioned St Patrick’s Day street gathering that has grown and grown over the past few years in the university district.

And now, Wilfrid Laurier University is on board with that messaging too, and its leaders say WLU has a fresh plan in place for next month.

David McMurray is the V-P of Student Affairs at WLU, he says it’s a collective effort between all of the stakeholders and says efforts to increase enforcement are critical.

He tells the Mike Farwell Show that they continue to meet with the mayor and police on a regular basis.

McMurray says from the Friday, right through to Sunday, a command post will be set up on campus on that March 17th weekend.

This yearly street event is costing them money too, McMurray says Laurier is investing “six figures” with the hiring of an additional 100 private security officers to be stationed throughout the campus borders and neighbourhood.

He says it’s not just local university students that showed up last March 17th on the street – reviewing the more serious charges from the date they found other community residents are showing up, even high schooler’s on March Break, and says they know that buses even came in from New York State.
