Minto homeowner seriously burned after corn stove fire

A Minto man suffered serious injuries after a fire broke out at his home on 16th Line.

Constable Marylou Schwindt says they got a call about a house fire around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

“It turns it was actually a corn stove, the victim has been trying to start the stove when a flashback occurred – this unfortunately caused him to start on fire.”

Schwindt says thanks to some quick thinking, and winter conditions, the man was able to extinguish the flames.

“Fortunately, the man was able to leave the house and roll in the snow – which is actually what put the fire out. At that point, he left his property and headed to a friends who then took him to hospital.”

Schwindt says the man suffered serious burns, and was airlifted to Hamilton General to receive further treatment.

“He’s now in stable condition. The fact that he thought about running outside and using the snow to put out the fire though – he probably saved himself from a lot worse of injuries, and maybe saved his own life.”

Schwindt adds that the Office of the Fire Marshal was contacted – but they did not attend in this case.
