Into the wild: hit and run suspect hides in forest, Guelph man charged

A reminder from Wellington County OPP – camouflage doesn’t work in the winter.

This comes after a bizarre hit and run on Irvine Street in the Township of Centre Wellington.

Constable Marylou Schwindt says they got the call around 6:30 a.m Tuesday.

“The complainant advised that someone came onto their property and hit two parked vehicles. That individual then took off on foot into the bush area.”

Schwindt says officers arrived, and because of the snow, it wasn’t hard to track down the suspect.

“Fortunately, it had snowed, so the officers were able to follow the footprints into the forest. They located the suspect – he was hiding under some brush in the forest.”

Schwindt says the Guelph man is now facing a slew of charges.

“He’s got himself into some trouble – he’s got Theft of Motor Vehicle x 2, Theft under $5000 from a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Property obtained by Crime under $5000, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident, Possession of Meth and Fail to Comply with Probation Order.”

Schwindt adds that although he was in possession of meth, they’re not sure if he was high at the time of the crime.

“It’s quite possible, but who knows what these guys are thinking. Our officers did a great job, they got there quickly, and from there – it wasn’t hard to piece together what had happened.”

23-year-old Eric Gordon Patterson will appear in Guelph Court on March 16 to answer to the charges.
