LRT officials optimistic for spring launch

It shouldn’t be long before LRT vehicles hit the tracks.

With three vehicles already completed, and more to come, the region says their optimistic for a spring launch.

Tests have continued this month on the tracks between Northfield and Caroline with positive results.

Regional Councillor Tom Galloway says staff describe the ride as very smooth, even better than expected.

“Staff are telling us that the vehicle is riding even better than they anticipated. They have had the vehicle under power in Kingston.”

Galloway adds he’s confident the region won’t see any problems with the delivery of future vehicles, given the recent settlement of a dispute between Bombardier and Metrolinx.

“Now that they have settled their differences, they can concentrate completely on our order, so we are a little more optimistic now.”

On Tuesday, the first LRT vehicle sent to the region from Bombardier headed back to Kingston, but Galloway says that trip was planned from the beginning.

“Repairs would not be the right word, these are upgrades to bring the first vehicle up to the very same level as the others.”

The region says they expect the 11 remaining vehicles to be delivered on time for a spring launch.
