Holiday season changes to garbage collection across the Region

With the holiday season comes presents, parties and a lot of waste.

To help manage all that excess trash the Region of Waterloo has altered their garbage collection schedule.

Starting after Christmas the region is allowing double garbage days, meaning you can put out a total of eight garbage bags curb side without a tag for two collection cycles.

Blue box and Green bin pick-up still happens every week and the Region says about 80 per cent of household waste can be collected that way.

The regular garbage collection schedule will also be altered over the break.

There will be no collection on Monday December 25th or Monday January 1st.

Instead Monday’s garbage will be picked up on Tuesday and every day after will be pushed back one day including Friday’s garbage that will be picked up Saturday.

The region will also be doing Christmas tree collection from January 2nd to the 12th.

A special truck will pick up trees so they can be composted and avoid the landfill.

Any trees discarded after the 12th will end up in the landfill.

Throwing out electronics is popular over the holidays, to properly discard of unwated electronics the region suggests visisting www.recyclemyelectronics.ca/on/ to find a local recycling location.
