Rangers fans merry heading into the break

It’s a good way to cap off the first half of the season.

The Kitchener Rangers rebounded from a loss Friday and clipped the Kingston Frontenacs 3-2 Sunday at the Aud.

Adam Mascherin led the way offensively with three points (2g-1a), giving him 12 goals and six assists in his last nine games.

He also drew a penalty in the third period, which led to Rangers head coach Jay McKee calling a timeout.

“[Mascherin] and [Kole Sherwood] were out there for an extended shift,” said McKee. “We wanted to make sure we had them rested.”

It worked. Mascherin assisted on Joseph Garreffa’s game-winning goal on the ensuing power play. It was the utility player’s first goal in 24 games.

“We had five D that have less than 100 games played and one that’s a forward in Garreffa,” said McKee. “Can’t say enough about what he’s done for our team.”

Sherwood also broke out of his slump, opening the scoring with his first goal in six games.

Luke Richardson played one of his best games in a while, and picked up the win for Kitchener making 35 saves.

“We gave him the game puck in the room. He came up with some timely saves,” said McKee.

The victory gives Kitchener 21 wins in their first 34 games of the season – the halfway point.

The players will now head home for the holidays, before returning ahead of a game in Owen Sound on December 28th.

“I like what we’re getting from a lot of our players,” said McKee about the first half of the season. “I’d like to see more consistency from our top guys; sometimes they’re on and off.”

“We have more, and I think we have better. We’re looking for a better second half.”
