Former Golden Hawk hoping to lift Grey Cup

He won a Yates Cup with Laurier in 2016, now Nakas Onyeka has a chance to win the Grey Cup on Sunday.

The 23-year-old linebacker with the Toronto Argos says he’s excited for the big game against the Calgary Stampeders, which is set for Ottawa’s TD Place Stadium.

“Growing up Canadian, it’s one of the things, you kind of dream of…” said Onyeka, who is from Brampton.

His mom and some other family members will be in the stands for the big game.

He’s also hoping fans of Laurier will support the double blue: “I feel like, if you are a former Golden Hawk or present Golden Hawk, there should be a little bit of space in your heart for the Argos, for sure.”

Onyeka recorded 14 special teams tackles in the regular season.

Argos kicker Ronnie Pfeffer is not expected to play as he’s on the injured list. He went to Laurier too and is from Kitchener.

There could be as many as six former Guelph Gryphons playing in the Grey Cup, including Cameron Walker and Jake Reinhart of the Argos, as well as Rob Maver, who plays for the Stamps.

570 NEWS has the pre-game show at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
