Group of residents in Puslinch urging council to change the name of Swastika Trail

Councillors in Puslinch are being asked to take sides in a debate to rename a private road.

A group of people who live on Swastika Trail want the street’s name changed, while others don’t.

Several neighbours on Swastika Trail have told city hall the street’s name is offensive and are now urging council to change it.

But the road is privately owned, and other residents say the Swastika has a storied history of being a symbol of good fortune, before it was adopted by Hitler and the Nazi Party.

Mayor Denis Lever tells the Mike Farewell Show council will learn more next month about what its abilities are within the Municipal Act. “There is a report that will come to council on December 6th and it will explain exactly how we would be able, if we desire to do it, how we would be able to do it, council will then have to consider do they actually want to change a name of a road they don’t own.”

He hopes the issue will be resolved when it’s debated around the council table two weeks later on December 20th.
