Rangers end the streak

By Chris Pope

The streak is over.

“It’s good to not have to talk about that anymore,” said Kitchener Rangers head coach Jay McKee.

The Rangers ripped the London Knights 4-2 at the Aud Tuesday, ending a 14-game winning streak for the Knights against the East Ave Blue.

“We were just sick and tired of [the streak]. It was beating us up mentally,” said former London (and Flint) forward Kole Sherwood, who actually had an assist for the Knights in the game the dominance began.

Sherwood led the way offensively Tuesday night with a hat-trick, including the game-winner and the insurance goal. He has nine points in six career games against London.

“The boys are rolling right now; 11 points in the last six games,” said the Columbus Blue Jackets prospect. We have to bring it this weekend, and start preparing now.”

Adam Mascherin had an assist on each of Sherwood’s markers, giving him six helpers over the last two games.

It wasn’t easy for the Rangers Tuesday. They were shorthanded seven times, and relied heavily on goaltender Luke Richardson. He made 31 saves in the win, rebounding from being pulled in Saturday’s game in Windsor.

“I’m proud of him,” said McKee. “It really shows he’s maturing and his confidence is growing, when he comes back with an effort like that.”

Defenceman Giovanni Vallati left the game after the first period, and didn’t return.

“He got a little bit tight; kind of a precautionary measure to keep him off,” said McKee.

The Rangers are back in action Friday, when they host the Guelph Storm, kicking off three games in three nights.
