In the wake of last night’s deadly crash on Highway 400, Conservative transportation critic Michael Harris is calling on the Ontario Government to take immediate action to make our highways safer.

The Kitchener-Conestoga MPP says he will be asking the government to create a task force to find the root cause of these deadly crashes.

Over the last three weeks, there has been five crashes that shut down the 401 between Milton and Kitchener.

One person died as a result of those crashes.

Last night’s deadly crash has heightened concerns about safety on our major highways.

Harris says he will ask the Liberal Government to create a task force that will investigate the sudden increase in serious crashes.

“I will be calling on Minister Del Duca and the Liberal Government to find out more about the root causes of the accidents, and perhaps solutions we can address, because there are too many people dying on our roads,” said Harris.

Harris also says there is another more short-term solution that the government is ignoring.

“The Government announced in September that it would be moving forward with legislation that would increase fines, penalties, even jail time for those convicted of careless driving.. and we have not seen that legislation tabled.”

The OPP have also stated a stern warning for transport truck drivers.

Police say they are stepping up enforcement for distracted, and inattentive transport truck drivers.

All six recent major crashes involved at least one transport truck.
