Officials remind us to ‘Think FAST’ on World Stroke Day

Sunday is World Stroke Day.

This has Grand River Hospital, Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services, and the Heart & Stroke Foundation teaming up to help raise awareness, and save lives.

Decals with the acronym ‘FAST’ will be placed on all of our local ambulances to help encourage people to seek emergency care if they’re experiencing stroke symptoms.

They say the ability to recognize stroke symptoms and act fast by calling emergency services can mean the difference between life and death, and the difference between recovery and a lasting disability.

There are an estimated 62,000 strokes in our country each year, and stroke is still the number three killer of Canadians, and the leading cause of disability.

The acronym FAST stands for:

Face: is it drooping?

Arms: can you raise both?

Speech: is it slurred or jumbled?

TIme: to call 911 right away.
