Kitchener man dies in Costa Rica, his family seeks answers

The family of a Kitchener man who died in Costa Rica under unusual circumstances has started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for his funeral, and to help find out what happened.

42-year-old Shawn Edmonds died last Saturday while on vacation at a hotel in Guanacaste.

Media reports from Costa Rica say he’d gotten into an argument, was handcuffed by hotel security, and while in their custody, fainted.

A hotel doctor pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Judicial Investigation Agency in Costa Rica is looking into what happened.

A statement from Global Affairs Canada to 570NEWS when we inquired about Edmonds’ death only says:

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian Citizen who passed away in Costa Rica. Canadian consular officials are working closely with local officials to gather more information and are providing consular assistance to the family and friends as required. To protect the privacy of the individual concerned, further details on this case cannot be released.”

A testimonial to Edmonds on the Go Fund Me page, reads in part:

“…..we are hoping to find out what happened and find the justice we need for Shawn as we lay him to rest in peace.”

Edmonds is described as a father of two daughters who was, quote, “….a very loving, kind and caring man and loved by everyone.”
