WB 401 reopened after a crash shut down highway for nine hours

The Westbound 401 has reopened after a crash shut down the highway for most of the day.

The OPP have charged a truck driver with Careless Driving after today’s nine-hour shut down of the Westbound 401 at Guelph Line

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt describes the scene as, “it’s like a bomb has gone off — there’s vehicle parts and debris all over the highway.”

Five vehicles collided near Guelph Line, around 8:00 a.m., forcing the closure of that side of the highway at Guelph Line.

Four of those were commercial vehicles, the other was a civilian vehicle. Police say there were only minor injuries.

Schmidt warns GTA commuters from the Region their drive home could be impacted.

He says a crash clean-up involving commercial vehicles usually takes longer than other crashes.

Schmidt says the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
