Kitchener decides to light up Breithaupt ball diamonds despite concern from neighbours

Kitchener City Council has voted in favour of a plan to put in lights at two Breithaupt Park ball diamonds.

The plan attracted criticism from neighbours who were concerned about parking, noise, litter and public urination that they felt would only get worse if the lights were installed.

The city argued they are facing a shortage in ball diamonds and must get the most out of existing spaces.

According to a city report adding new lights at two Breithaupt Park diamonds will cost just over $500,000 and will add 600 additional hours for booking.

If the city were to purchase land and build a new diamond the estimated cost would be over $5 Million for the same number of playable hours.

The city says they have taken the concerns of residents seriously and have a number of accommodations.

The report says they are looking at increasing the number of parking spaces in the park and will increase signage directing park goers off the road and into on-site parking spots.

Signs will also be used to remind park goers of appropriate behavior. In addition the city says they will work with Kitchener Minor Baseball Association to ensure behavior standards are known.
