Dangerous goods spill forces closure of Hwy. 400 north of Toronto

By News Staff

Highway 400 between Highway 9 and 88 has been closed north of Toronto due to a dangerous goods spill.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says a tractor-trailer and another vehicle collided north of Canal Road around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Emergency crews determined the truck was carrying dangerous goods and a small amount of paint-thinner-type material was leaking.

Hazmat units from Bradford West Gwillimbury and Barrie fire departments are on the scene assessing the situation and say the small leak has been contained.

OPP says the concern is for a greater spill or possibly a fire once emergency crews open the back of the truck.

Vehicles trapped between Canal Road and Highway 88 have been evacuated and all traffic heading northbound is being forced off at Highway 9.

The highway is expected to be closed for several more hours.
