Local YWCA says ‘it’s time for a change’ as it looks to rebrand

When you hear, YWCA, the first thing that comes to mind for many is YMCA, but the two are different organizations.

That’s why the YWCA is asking for your help to choose a new logo.

CEO Elizabeth Clarke says the organization has been in the Kitchener-Waterloo region for 112 years.

“We’ve been operating programs for women and children since our birth, currently we have between 25-30 programs for women and children, including homelessness and housing programs,” she says.

Clarke says they aren’t the only YWCA to change their logo and have been considering it for some time.

“We have realized, not just recently, but probably over the last 20 years or so that the public’s confusion between our organization and the YMCA just can’t seem to be surmounted.”

Clarke says every single day they see the confusion.

“Last week, the day we launched our survey, we had two different publications refer to us as the YMCA.”

Clarke says they’re also going to change the way they refer to themselves.

“We’re going to start using the YW, in much the same way the YMCA has since the 60’s called themselves the ‘Y’. It doesn’t seem like a big change, but the Niagara Region made the change 3 or 4 years ago and they’ve advised us that they really have seen a difference.”

“The organization just wants to know which logo appeals and sort of captures the image that we hope conveys about ourselves,” Clarke says.

You can help by heading to their website and choosing one of eight logos before the poll closes on Sunday.
