Region sees warmest day of 2017 to date

Sunshine and 21.5 degrees — not bad for a Monday.

Temperatures climbed past 20 degrees for the first time this year in Waterloo Region, bringing plenty of people outdoors to enjoy the warm weather.

“I’m from the islands, so the sun and the warm weather just totally brings me out,” said Candace, who was out for a stroll in Waterloo Park.

“We’ve been cooped up for the past few months,” said Doug, who was taking his son to see the park’s animals. “[It’s nice to] see the excitement on his face.”

Aside from a mid-afternoon thunderstorm, the weather capped off a warmer-than-usual weekend, with sunshine on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Geoff Coulson of Environment Canada, it’s still too early to be thinking of summer.

“As we get into next week, temperatures look like they’re going to settle back down to more seasonal values, and that probably looks more like daytime highs of 11 [and] 12 degrees for next week,” says Coulson.

With snow falling as recently as last Thursday and Friday, some wonder whether frostier temperatures could still return, but Coulson says most of that is in the rear view:

“We’re consistently going to be seeing these daytime highs into the double-digits as we go through the rest of April, and so it’s really only those overnight temperatures where we could still have a few chilly nights here and there.”
