U-W president commits to more mental health support on campus

The president of the University of Waterloo says work is underway to help those on campus dealing with mental health issues.

In a blog post on the university’s website, Feridun Hamdullahpur says he has been moved by the community’s “overwhelming offers of support “.

It follows the recent deaths of two students, by suicide, on campus this year.

“Beginning immediately, I will be convening a president’s advisory committee on mental health that will be responsible for guiding a listening process that will seek to gain further input from our local community, other institutions and external experts.” said Hamdullahpur.

He says the University of Waterloo is increasing its public education efforts and open houses are in the works. A task force also plans to have a full report ready for the fall.

Meantime, a student petition was launched last week, urging the university to do more.

The University of Guelph started a door knocking campaign last week to offer support to students, following the deaths of four students, dating back to the fall of 2016.
