Local sports programming gets cut from CTV Kitchener

Local sports and other programming is getting cut at several CTV stations across our province, including here in Kitchener.

It was announced on Tuesday that there will be layoffs in Kitchener, London and Windsor.

Unifor Media Director Howard Law says locally, 3 full-time and 5 part-time jobs will be cut at the Kitchener CTV station.

“There are a total of 8 layoffs, which is 10 per cent of the workforce, at the Kitchener CTV station. Three of those layoffs are in sports, as they’re cutting the local sports programming,” said Law.

In a release, the Union representing CTV says there are more cuts expected at stations across Canada. They say they will meet with the stations to discuss these layoffs, and will work to negotiate the best deal for the workers impacted by the cuts.

Meantime, Matthew Garrow with Bell Media has released this comment:

“We have reduced a number of broadcast positions at Bell Media local TV stations in Kitchener, Windsor, and London as part of a larger restructuring at Bell Media. The restructuring is a response to the challenges we and other Canadian media companies are facing on multiple fronts: changing broadcast technologies and growing international competition, a tough advertising market and ongoing regulatory pressure.”
