Nine Canadian companies in the running for $20-million Carbon X-Prize

VANCOUVER – Nine Canadian companies are among 27 teams in the running for a 20 million dollar prize offered in a competition to create technology that converts carbon dioxide into valuable products.

The N-R-G COSIA (co’-SIA’) Carbon X-Prize is funded by Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance and U-S company N-R-G.

The aim of the competition is to flip the economics of climate change on its head, by transforming harmful C-O-2 emissions into something useful and even marketable.

One company in the competition is Edmonton’s Ingenuity Lab, where director Carlo Montemagno (mon’-teh’-MAN’-yo’) has developed a method to mimic photosynthesis in non-living materials.

The technology transforms carbon dioxide from industrial gas emissions into different chemical compounds, opening up new possibilities for creating valuable products.

Also in the running is Montreal’s Carbicrete, which has developed a way to create carbon-neutral concrete by using steel slag instead of cement as a binding agent and curing it with C-O-2.

Ten finalists will be announced in 2018 and the winner will be announced in 2020.
