University of Waterloo partners with Facebook

The University of Waterloo is partnering with Facebook, and 16 other prestigious universities to work on technology research projects.

Facebook says the partnership comes the company looks to find new revenue opportunities in virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

Mike Szarka, director of research partnerships with UW says the partnership is highlighting the strength of Waterloo Region.

“We’re honoured to be chosen by Facebook to participate in this kind of a partnership with an elite set of universities,” says Szarka. “To be the first Canadian university invited to participate, speaks to Waterloo’s global reputation.”

He says an advanced research partnership like this will give local students and professors the opportunity to advance their research.

“We’re already in early discussions with Facebook about responding to some areas of interest from them,” says Szarka. “Hopefully within a few months, we may have our first projects being put together.”
