Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig is joining Premier Kathleen Wynne on her business mission to Japan this week.

He is there looking to build on future growth opportunities and to connect with current investors.

On Monday, Mayor Craig is meeting with Toyota to chat about the Cambridge plant which currently employs 7,000 people.

“It’s absolutely imperative that we support them at every political level and it’s about saying that we want to be as supportive as we possibly can to retain jobs in Cambridge and expand the Cambridge base.”

Later in the week, he’ll be meeting with the Governor of Tokyo. “It’s a face to face meeting to talk about the city of Cambridge, the province of Ontario, the business opportunities and the support of the political officials and any kind of expansion plans that may be taking place in the province of Ontario.”

Craig says it’s extremely important to have these face to face meetings to help build with investors that already have a strong presence in the city.

The Cambridge mayor heads back home on Thursday night. That is when Wynne will hop on a plane to South Korea.

Representatives from Communitech, The University of Waterloo, The Waterloo Region Economic Development Corporation and Connect Tech Inc. in Guelph are also joining the Premier in Japan and South Korea.
