Guelph council to discuss, debate renewal permit for Aberfoyle aquifer

In front of a packed gallery at Guelph City Hall, council asked the province to review Nestle’s renewal permit to continue to take water from aquifers in Aberfoyle and Wellington County.

Guelph Councillor James Gordon spearheaded the motion and got approval from his colleagues. It means the city will ask Ontario to review the multi-billion dollar corporation’s permit.

The debate has many residents in and around the surrounding area heated. Nestle takes water from the aquifers and only pays the province less than 3.71 dollars per million litres drawn. The issues for the people of Guelph isn’t just the money, but having their water source depleted. It along with other areas rely solely on the ground water supply and the water shed to provide the life-giving liquid to it’s people.

Voting no means the renewal issue will be pushed back and will be brought forth back to council on November 7th.

On Facebook, Gordon said the debate will set a precedent in Ontario.
