Guelph firm ‘Netsweeper’ accused of helping facilitate online censorship for Bahrain

A Guelph company has been identified as being at the centre of a small Arab nation’s online censorship system.

The Internet watchdog group Citizen Lab says the web filtering firm Netsweeper is helping block news and opposition websites in Bahrain — a Gulf Arab monarchy wracked by unrest since pro-democracy protests were stifled there in 2011.

Citizen Lab says the discovery undermines Canada’s forceful condemnations of online censorship and Ottawa has issued a statement saying it expects Canadian businesses to operate according to Canadian values.

Netsweeper did not respond to a request for comment.
