Man drowns in Lake Erie while swimming with friends

NORFOLK COUNTY, ON – OPP say a man has drowned while swimming with two friends in Lake Erie.

The Ontario Provincial Police in Norfolk County responded to a report of a drowning yesterday around 4:15 p.m. at Eric Boulevard in Long Point Provincial Park.

Police later identified the man as 19-year-old Huessein Da Silva of Hamilton.

Police say Da Silva was swimming with two friends in Lake Erie when he went underwater and never came back up.

Along with emergency services from Norfolk and Trenton, The Canadian Coast Guard dispatched their Hercules aircraft to help with the search but due to poor weather conditions, the search was suspended.

Later that day around 7:15 p.m. two men were walking along the beach when they discovered the body of the male who had drowned.

They attempted to save his life using CPR but were unsuccessful.

The coroner attended the scene and pronounced the male dead.

The identity of the man will not be released until the next of kin is notified.
