It seems not everything is more expensive these days.
The latest data from Statistics Canada shows a dramatic drop in food prices in June.
One expert credits what’s called, “The Walmart effect” for the decline.
Dalhousie University’s Dean of the Faculty of Management, Professor Sylvain Charlebois says the retailing giant has made major inroads in the grocery sector and has forced the traditional grocery chains to step up their game.
He says the proof is in the numbers with Walmart experiencing a sales increase of 6.7 per cent from last year.
Charlebois says “the transformation has been impressive” saying 10 to 15 years ago “they were a mediocre food retailer at best.”
He says, to a lesser degree, even Costco is gaining market share in this sector.
He says the big stores, like Loblaw and Sobeys have in turn been pressuring ventors to reduce prices.
