Olympic profile: Sarah Pavan (Kitchener)

Kitchener’s Sarah Pavan will realize an Olympic dream when she puts her feet in the sand on Sunday.

The 29-year-old will make her Olympic debut in beach volleyball, a sport she just took up three years ago. The Forest Heights Collegiate Institute grad. made the switch after Canada’s indoor team failed to make the 2012 Olympics in London.

“You know this is something I’ve worked for my whole athletic career…It’s finally happening, so there’s definitely a lot of excitement, but I’m trying to, you know, stay focused on the goal for now.” Pavan told 570 News in a recent interview.

Pavan also moved to California to train with the world’s best in beach volleyball. “Being able to train against some of the best teams in the world everyday, has definitely helped our team grow,”

She says another one of the advantages is they face a lot of the Olympic teams on a weekly basis on the world tour.

Pavan, who describes herself as an “Olympic junkie”, is hoping to check out some other sports including track and field, swimming and indoor volleyball, if her schedule permits.

LISTEN: Pavan will also have a large contingent of family and friends heading to Rio.

Pavan and partner Heather Bansley will face a Dutch team in their first game on Sunday afternoon.
