Kitchener fire causes almost $500,000 damage

Damage is estimated at $450,000 following a multi unit house fire in the Breithaupt area of Kitchener on Friday morning.

Waterloo Regional Police tell 570 News it started as a car fire in a garage of an older home at 50 Breithaupt Street and quickly spread to the home and then to two neighbouring houses.

Staff Sergeant Mike Mercer says crews are on scene and residents of all three homes have been evacuated and are all safe and unharmed.

However, fire officials tell 570 News one firefighter was taken to hospital for observation, likely due to heat exhaustion.

Kitchener Fire Department Platoon Chief, Kevin Carley says some of the home owners will have access to their homes later today.

“The home owner out of 50 Breithaupt will be displaced…”

Fire prevention will be on scene later today to determine a cause.

The intersection of Wellington at Waterloo Street remains closed as firefighters continue to work on hot spots.
