401 widening in Cambridge expected to last three more years

Work to widen the 401 through Cambridge is likely to continue until the end of 2019.

The Record reports money in last week’s Ontario budget was set aside for the next phase of the work, between
Hespeler and Townline Road.

A spokesperson for the the Ministry of Transportation tells the paper the highway will be widened to ten lanes in that stretch and work is expected to begin in early 2018.

Widening the 401 from six lanes to ten, Between Highway 8 and Hespeler Road, began in June 2015 and is expected to end in 2019.

The cost of the Hespeler to Townline Road widening has not been determined yet, but the province expects to award the job under one contract.

Widening cost almost $122 million along the 5.5-kilometre stretch between Highway 8 and Hespeler Road.
