Beau Baker remembered as kind, outgoing and talented man

Friends and family continue to mourn the loss of 20-year-old Beau Baker, fatally shot by Waterloo Regional Police last Thursday.

Ahead of a vigil planned to remember Baker, friends say he was kind, outgoing, generous and an aspiring tattoo artist with great talent.

Darryl James Waldick says Beau knew him as D.J. and he’s been friends with him and Beau’s family for years.

“I didn’t believe it at first” says Waldick. “I didn’t believe it at all. Then my sister sent me the post of the actual incident, and that’s when it kind of set in. I messaged his mother right away. I miss him.”

Waldick says Baker was a great artist who had wanted to be a tattoo artist since he was 15 years old.

“He was really adventurous” says Waldick. “He always wanted to do things. He never wanted to be couped up in the house. He’d always be sitting there like ‘No man, let’s go do something! Let’s get out there! Let’s go do something.’ And we’d all be sitting there like, ‘Beau, you’re crazy man.”‘

“I’m going to get a little teary here, sorry” adds Waldick. “The last time I saw him, was uh, we were all drinking and stuff and just having the greatest time. Just so we could have one night of old times.”

Hundreds are expected to turn out for the vigil tonight in Kitchener at 77 Brybeck Crescent at 8:30 p.m.

There’s also a peaceful demonstration planned for tomorrow outside Kitchener City Hall at 3 o’clock and officers are expected on scene to help make the event run calmly.

Meanwhile, more information is coming to light about the officer under investigation in the incident.

Regional Police have confirmed he was with the force for less than ten years and still remains in active duty.

“The rally tonight is an opportunity for the community and family to grieve and our thoughts go out to those affected by these tragic set of circumstances” says Staff Sergeant, Michael Haffner in an email.

The SIU continues to probe the incident which surrounds one officer and seven witnesses.
