Suspensions for non-immunized students put on hold

No suspensions will be handed out to students who don’t have updated immunization records this school year.

With three new shots required and a new provincial records system, Region of Waterloo Public Health decided it was better to catch everyone up next year.

Linda Black, Manager of the Vaccine Prevention Disease Program with public health tells 570 News they need time to organize the new records system and fish out any duplicate records.

“That process has resulted in thousands of duplicate records in the system so we need a little bit of time to review the records and manage those duplicates in order to prevent inadvertently suspending a student that didn’t need to be suspended.”

Update letters will still be sent out in the coming months. Elementary schools can expect them at the end of February. Secondary school letters will be sent out in late April.
