Former Leaf Doug Gilmour in Waterloo today

Leaf fans listen up!

Former great Doug Gilmour is in Waterloo today for the launch of “If Your Team Wins, Your Community Wins” at Shoeless Joes Sports Grill on King Street North.

He took the time to chat about his career with 570’s Midday Show.

And as General Manager of the Kingston Frontenacs, Gilmour tells 570 News it’s a unique experience working with younger hockey players.

“It’s rewarding to everybody to see guys go on to the NHL but it also rewarding to see these guys go to University after they’re done…paid for through the OHL and the hockey clubs.”

He adds he is pleased that the OHL is now doing more to battle mental illness.

“These kids are young and they go through different stages of their life, we draft them when they’re 16 and they can stay with us until 19-20 and sometimes you don’t know what they’re feeling from behind the scenes.”

And we had to ask what his hopes were for the Leafs’ home opener against Montreal Wednesday night, and no surprise, he’ll be cheering for the blue and white.

“You just want that first game to start and get out on the ice and start playing…so I’m wishing them luck!”

570 News will have the game for you starting at 7 o clock Wednesday night.
