Politics stalling reconstruction of Margaret Avenue Bridge

Rail promises made by the Liberals during the provincial election are halting reconstruction to the Margaret Avenue Bridge.

This past Monday, Kitchener City Council approved a recommendation to look at building a larger bridge to accommodate the future plans.

“If we end up building the larger structure, the project would actually be delayed by about three months” says Manager of Engineering Design and Approvals, Steve Allen. “We had originally planned to have the structure complete in Spring 2015 and this would push it to the Summer.”

The six week delay will help engineers figure out the exact size of the new bridge, and give them time to work with other levels of government to see who can help pay the extra $1.2 million dollars.

“I think the larger bridge is in everybody’s interests given all the announcements that have been made and the proposals that have been made” adds Allen. “Collectively this is in everybody’s interests, and I think when we start having those discussions that will be clear to everyone.”

Council will vote on the issue August 11th, and if they elect to build the bigger bridge, construction wouldn’t start until November.
