Laurier Athletics hands out annual hardware

A baseball and hockey player have won the 2013-14 President’s Award at Wilfrid Laurier University.

The President’s Award, announced at Monday night’s athletic banquet, went to Golden Hawks baseball player Jonathan Brouse and women’s hockey player Candice Styles.

Brouse helped Laurier to its first-ever OUA Championship in men’s baseball. Styles and her team won the school’s 11th OUA title in women’s hockey.

The Rich Newbrough Rookie of the Year Award, handed out annually for the most outstanding athletic performance from a male and female rookie, was awarded to dual sport athlete Jacky Normandeau and football player Kwaku Boateng.

Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award: James Fracas (men’s football) and Bree Chaput (women’s basketball)

Fred Nichols Community Service Leadership Award: Doreen Bonsu (women’s basketball) and Brent Vandenberg (men’s hockey)

Glenn Carroll Team of the Year Award: presented to women’s hockey after an outstanding season that saw them win their 11th OUA Championship banner before placing fourth at the CIS Championship.

Marty Wamsley Student Trainer of the Year Award: Kelsie Wagner and Lindsey Parent

Earl C. Shelley Unsung Hero Award: Kerry Martin

Tuffy Knight Award: Chris Povey

Chuck Classen Award of Excellence for Team Managers: Stephanie Klein

Dean E. Brandon Award: Megan Jacklin

Bill Haggstrom Trophy: Sebastian Clarke
