The Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club ushered in the new on Wednesday by unveiling their new captain along with a redesigned Rangers-Sun Life warm-up jersey. The Rangers named Ben Fanelli as the captain for the 2013-14 season in advance of the team’s home opener on Friday.
The 20-year old defencemen is entering his final OHL season following a breakout year in 2012-13. He shared Most Valuable Player honours last season after leading all rearguards with a +23 rating and recording a career-best 23 points.
Fanelli said about the selection “it’s a huge honour to be named captain of the Kitchener Rangers.” Fanelli succeeds Ryan Murphy as the club’s on-ice leader.
Rangers General Manager Murray Hiebert also announced Wednesday that the team has completed a trade with the Oshawa Generals.
In the deal, the Rangers send forward Josh Sterk to Oshawa, in exchange for a conditional fourth round pick in the 2014 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection and a sixth round pick in 2015.
