OTTAWA – Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq says she’ll focus on responsible resource development, safe Arctic shipping and sustainable northern communities during her term as Arctic Council chair.
Aglukkaq, who took over as chair of the Arctic Council last month during a ceremony in Sweden, spoke today in Ottawa to the Economic Club of Canada.
The Nunavut MP says she understands the frustrations many northerners feel when people from the south try to tell them how they should live, without having much interest in helping them build sustainable, healthy communities.
She says the Arctic Council’s theme during her term will be development for people in the North.
Aglukkaq touted the government’s investment in the Canadian High Arctic Research Station and aboriginal health research.
She says the Arctic Council will also create a Circumpolar Business Forum to bring together indigenous and non-indigenous business and industry.
