NFB to launch Netflix-style subscription service for documentaries

By The Canadian Press

MONTREAL – The National Film Board of Canada is launching a Netflix-like subscription service to promote auteur documentaries.

The publicly funded production house says the multiplatform initiative would feature NFB and non-NFB fare.

Subscribers would be able to watch the curated material on smartphones, computers, tablets and Web-connected TVs and be able to create and share their own playlists.

There’s no word yet on cost, or what films would be included.

The NFB says the service will launch next year, with an initial rollout in North America and Europe.

The NFB says the service is being developed in co-operation with “prestigious national and international partners.”
