MONTREAL – Telefilm Canada is cutting staff and slashing its documentary feature fund in half to cope with reduced government support.
The federal agency says several belt-tightening measures will shave $2.7 million in expenses in the first year of a three-year plan.
The announcement follows last month’s federal budget, which cut subsidies by $10.6 million, or 10 per cent, over the next three years.
Telefilm says cuts from various film funds amount to $1.7 million. That includes a $500,000 cut to a $1-million documentary feature fund and a $500,000 cut from training initiatives.
The remaining $1 million will come from administration cuts, including the loss of 16 full-time jobs.
Another 14 full-time positions will be eliminated in the following two years.
