Adele sweeps Grammy Awards with 6 wins

It was an emotional night at the 54th annual Grammy Awards with touching tributes and big wins for singer Adele.

Music reporter Rudy Blair was at the Staples Centre for the awards show and live Tweeted the results and his thoughts on the show:

Two-time Grammy winner LL Cool J hosted the show, which had been without a host for the past seven years. Although this is his first time hosting the Grammys, he had hosted the live Grammy nominations concert since it began in 2008.

The show was filled with tributes to the late Whitney Houston, including a performance by Jennifer Hudson who sang “I Will Always Love You.” Tributes were also given to Soul Train’s Don Cornelius and Etta James.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band opened the show with a rocking performance of their latest song “We Take Care of Our Own.”

LL Cool J then took to the stage and paid tribute to Houston by asking the audience to start the show with a prayer.

Other notable performances in the evening were Coldplay and Rihanna performing together, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters, Nicki Minaj and Tony Bennett.

Sir Paul McCartney served up two performances during the evening, singing his latest single “My Valentine” backed by Diana Krall on piano, before returning to close the show with the Beatles classic “End,” where he was joined on stage by Springsteen and the Foo Fighters.

By the end of the evening, Adele had walked out with six awards including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Single of the Year. She performed “Rolling In The Deep,” for the first time live since recovering from throat surgery.

The Foo Fighters also walked away four awards, sweeping the Rock category.

Folk pop band Bon Iver won Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album.

A number of awards were given out Sunday afternoon before the telecast.

Early winners included Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett — who invited his son up to help him accept the award — and “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who claimed best musical theater album for “The Book of Mormon.”

Deadmau5, the DJ from Niagara Falls, Ont., had a trio of Grammy noms going in, but Skrillex swept those categories.

Toronto R&B singer Melanie Fiona also took home two Grammy Awards, best traditional R&B performance and best R&B song for her Cee Lo Green collaboration “Fool For You.”
