Canada’s Defence Minister Peter MacKay weds

OTTAWA – Defence Minister Peter MacKay is no longer one of Ottawa’s most eligible bachelors.

MacKay got married yesterday in a private ceremony in Mexico.

The bride is Nazanin Afshin-Jam, who has a long and varied resume.

She’s an Iranian-born human rights activist, an actor, singer, pilot, and was crowned Miss World Canada in 2003.

Afshin-Jam and her family fled Iran after the 1979 Islamic revolution, and settled in the Vancouver area.

She’s 32, and MacKay is 46.

Although the wedding was a closely-guarded secret, reports say his parents were among the guests.

The two reportedly met seven years ago when she was in Ottawa to speak about human rights abuses, and friends say MacKay popped the question last summer.

On his website, MacKay calls Afshin-Jam the most important person in his life.

The Nova Scotia M-P wasn’t the only cabinet minister to head down the aisle over the holidays.

Heritage Minister James Moore and girlfriend Courtney Payne tied the knot on December 29th in snowy Ottawa.

Payne is a communications staffer in the prime minister’s office.
