Green Party takes debate fight to court

OTTAWA – The Green Party goes to court, Tuesday, to plead its case that Leader Elizabeth May be allowed in the federal leaders debate on April 12.

According to a new poll from Nanos Research for the Globe and Mail, she has a lot of support behind her.

May said she won’t be letting down the 61 per cent of Canadians who said they would like to see her in the debates

She told 1310News the party has a very strong case.

“We have a lot of evidence that they’ve made a decision that violates the CRTC rules,” May said.

She added that time is of the essence and her lawyer will be applying to have the proceedings sped up.

“We’re in the court case for the long haul, but it’s only relevant for the 2011 election, if we can get a court date basically this week,” May said.

She also said she’s been touched by the support she’s received, especially with a petition that already has over 100,000 signatures.

Former prime ministers Joe Clark and Paul Martin both said the consortium’s decision is undemocratic.
