OTTAWA, Ont – There are still many loose ends surrounding Canada’s G8 initiative to help mothers and children in poor countries.
At last week’s G8 summit in Huntsville, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the $5 billion dollar plan with much fanfare, but there is much to plan in order to make good on the commitment to save the lives of 1.3 million children aged five and under, as well as 64,000 mothers.
The money is supposed to be new, coordinated and targeted at the most egregious problems of women and children in poor countries, and lever up total spending of over $10 billion.
However, not every G8 country has said how it will fund its share of the initiative, so it is difficult to determine whether all the money is new.
