A look inside the G20 Detention Centre

TORONTO, Ont – 680News took a first hand look inside the G20 Detention Centre Tuesday, located on Eastern Avenue.

Close to 1,000 people were held in the compound over the weekend, in well over 100 makeshift cells. Each held up to 20 individuals and was equipped with a portable toilet. At the back of the warehouse was a small room containing approximately 10 phone booths.

Most people under arrest were transported to the jail house by coach bus or court service trucks, where they were searched and then booked.

Cells were littered with Styrofoam cups, half eaten sandwiches, apple cores and orange peels.

Toronto Police Staff Superintendent Jeff McGuire told 680News, “with large groups of people coming through, I wouldn’t dispute that some may feel they did  not get food and water as quick as they liked but these necessities were provided.”

According to McGuire, “they could process about 50 prisoners an hour, and the peak number of people at any time was 650.”

Police said about 700 people were released without charges.
