Waterloo slaps storm water tax on school board

The Waterloo Region District School Board has issued a statement in the wake of last night’s budget approval by Waterloo City Council.
Trustees are angry over the city’s decision to slap a Storm Water Management Tax on the Board.
In fact, it’s also firing off a letter of censure to the city, as well as to the minister of education, the Ontario Public School Boards Association and several politicians.
Board Chair Mike Ramsay maintains storm water management is the city’s responsibility and it should fund it the way most other municipalities are – without taxing school boards.
Board staff have been directed not to pay the invoice when it comes in.
Ramsay argues “The tax exempt status of school boards is rooted deeply in the history of this province and no municipality has the right to take funding away from our students.”
