Death rate at Grand River Hospital highest in Ontario

The numbers are getting better, but Grand River Hospital still had the highest death rate among Ontario hospitals in 2008.
However, when the study for this year is released next year it could be an entirely different story.
The latest annual report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information includes what it calls a national baseline, which looks at the ratio of actual deaths to expected deaths.
That figure is 100, with Grand River listed as 119.
Still, that’s down from 142, when the study was first launched five years ago.
And.. in-house tracking shows that figure is now below the national average for this year: 99 in the first quarter and 92 in the second quarter.
Hospital Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Maxwell tells 570 News on reason for the high figure for last year was the make up of patients included in the study: many were terminally ill and should not have been included in the analysis.
As well the hospital is taking a different approach to identifying and treating infections.
St. Mary Hospital is well below the average at 76.
Due to small patient numbers, Cambridge Memorial Hospital is not reported.
