Some fines for traffic violations will double in the new year.
For example, running a red light will come with a $1,000 fine, right now the fine is $500.
Those convicted of careless driving and failure to remain at the scene of a collision could be hit with fines as high as $2,000, up from $1,000.
Other existing maximum penalties for these offences will remain, including a two-year licence suspension and six-month jail term.
Drivers who fail to pull over and stop for emergency vehicles or follow fire vehicles too closely could be hit with a maximum fine of $2,000, three demerit points plus a possible two-year licence suspension.
That’s up from the current maximum penalty of a $500 fine.
